- What is it called?
It is called the Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools, but we often call it the “TA Award” for short. - What does it cover?
The Award is an introduction to working in schools and covers five units:
– Child and young person development
– Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
– Communication and professional relationships
– Equality, diversity, and inclusion
– Schools as organisations - Who is it for?
It is suitable for anyone who wants to work in a school (Primary or Secondary) in a support role; this could be a teaching assistant, learning support assistant, lunchtime supervisor or office staff. - What does it cost?
The course itself is free, but we ask for a £60 registration fee to cover your registration for the qualification with City & Guilds. We register you within the first 3 weeks of the course and cannot refund the fee. - Will I be accepted?
The course requires you to be able to speak, read and write English fluently, at the equivalent of a level 2 (GCSE grade A-C). Your tutor will assess your writing skills before accepting you onto the course. You also need to be able to provide identification evidence and a National Insurance number at the start of the course. - Will it get me a job in a school?
Schools themselves decide what qualifications they need from their staff, but this qualification will certainly help to show not only that you know the basics, but that you are committed to learning and are self-motivated. Note that most schools will expect teaching assistants to have level 2 in maths and English (GCSE level A-C). - What else do I need?
You will need a computer or laptop, an internet connection, and an email address.
There is a textbook which is useful but not essential:
Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools – Louise Burnham; Brenda Baker; ISBN 978-0-435032-03-6
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Certificate-Supporting-Teaching-Learning-Candidate/dp/0435032038
If you intend to buy this, it may be available second hand and on other sites or in a library. - What should I consider?
By joining this course, you will be making a big commitment
– It runs for 15 weeks during term time, 3 hours per week in a group session.
– You will be expected to attend every session on time and participate in group discussion and reflection.
– You’ll be given homework assignments each week. The homework can take some learners up to 4-6 hours each week depending on how quickly they write.
– It requires good organisational skills, independent study and research skills, motivation and enthusiasm. - Will it qualify me to work in a nursery?
This course is not specific for that age group, and while there is some overlap, if you want to work in a nursery, you would be much better off with an Early Years / Childcare qualification. - What comes afterwards?
Learners who successfully complete the Award may wish to progress to the full level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. This covers other topics, goes into greater depth, and looks at practical aspects of working as a teaching assistant. It includes a voluntary placement in a school which requires a criminal record disclosure/check (DBS).
