Through our Eyes

Through our Eyes was a small pilot project that took place in Autumn 2024 funded by the Greater London Authority (GLA) as part of the London Engagement Collaborative (LEC) Good Ideas Fund initiative. Building on the success of our award-winning ESOL and participatory photography project Picture This!, this project explored new possibilities by applying our methodology in a different context to language learning.

Partnering with Idea Store Learning, we worked with a small group of older residents in Tower Hamlets with the aim to tackle loneliness, build community connections and amplify voices through photography and creative writing. The project aimed to build self-esteem, teach new skills and create meaningful connections.

A standout moment was when participants shared their photo stories with an ESOL class bringing together “old” East Enders and “new” East Enders. This exchange of stories and shared knowledge about the area bridged generational and cultural divides, sparked new friendships and boosted participants’ confidence.

“Your inspiration to think of my successes has been very beneficial for my mental health and outlook on my remaining time here.”  Through our Eyes participant

As a pilot, Through our Eyes was an opportunity to test, learn and grow. We’ve reflected on its journey and impact and look forward to building on these insights to shape future projects and training.
