Webinar – Participatory photography and creative writing in the ESOL classroom

November 14 @ 16:30 - 18:30

£25

Nowadays nearly everyone has a smartphone with camera and photo album, making it an invaluable resource for teachers and learners. Taking and sharing photos allows learners to express themselves, share their worlds and articulate thoughts and ideas on topics significant to their lives. This builds community and is a catalyst for creative writing, including poetry.

In this workshop we well explore how photography supports and enriches language learning in the ESOL classroom. We will take a look at examples of work produced, hear about the British Council ELTons award winning participatory photography and ESOL project Picture This!  and have a look at activities to try in the classroom.

Sarah Sheldon is an ESOL teacher, teacher trainer, resource writer and project manager at Learning Unlimited. Sarah developed and ran the successful Picture This! project in 2020, funded by the Greater London Authority (GLA) ESOL plus Arts programme, in collaboration with Fotosynthesis, a participatory visual media training organisation. Drawing upon this experience, Sarah now runs standalone ESOL and photography courses, integrates photography and creative writing activities into her regular ESOL classes and delivers teacher training on all she has learned.
