Watch the video clip of Marina, an ESOL teacher, using the LEA approach with one learner. As you watch, note the stages she works through.
Then do the quiz – drag the stages into the correct order.
Sort elements
The teacher and learner look at some pictures of vegetables and fish and talk about them, saying which ones they like, which ones you can find in Somalia and how you say some of the words in Somali. After some discussion, the teacher transcribes some of the things the learner has said to create a short text, making some minor changes to improve the accuracy of the language and reading aloud as she goes.
The teacher prompts the learner to read the text, pointing to the words with her finger, helping and re-reading as necessary.
The teacher writes out each sentence on a separate piece of paper, saying each word as she writes it, putting in punctuation and encouraging the learner to follow. She then encourages the learner to read each complete sentence. The learner counts the sentences.
The teacher cuts up each sentence into words and asks the learner to re-assemble them, which she does. They read the whole text aloud again.
The teacher asks the learner to copy the text. The learner takes the whole text and words home for further practice.
