Case study – Volunteer & walk leader

Keith Turpin
Volunteer on Walk and Talk and Welcome Project

Keith Turpin, by profession a data quality manager at Lloyds of London, took early retirement a few years ago. He must now qualify as one of the busiest volunteers in the country. LU first met Keith when he signed up as a volunteer for our Walk & Talk project in 2020. He came with excellent credentials as he is a trained, and therefore professional, London Walk Guide.

In this capacity he leads walks in Camden, Southwark and the East End. For LU tutors it was definitely a case where the trainee knew a lot more about the subject than the trainers. Keith contributes hugely to Walk & Talk leading walks for migrants and migrant families in Lambeth and Southwark.

Once LU had hooked Keith we found it hard to let go. He is now a volunteer on our Welcome Project working with asylum seeking families in Lambeth. The project benefits from his energy, knowledge and enthusiasm as well as from the advice he is able to give as a result of being a volunteer at the Coppleston Centre in Southwark. Keith is always willing to turn his hand to a range of tasks from connecting asylum seekers to legal help to mopping floors.

Keith also leads Dementia Friendly Walks in Southwark and finds time for the Brunel Museum.

Every project should have a Keith.
